Regenerative Medicine in New Jersey

Hypersensitive knots and adhesions located in bands of skeletal muscle are commonly known as trigger points. Often occurring in the arms, legs, lower back, or neck, they are characterized by continuous muscle tightening and can contribute to chronic pain that restricts movement and negatively impacts quality of life.

Trigger point injections are a cutting-edge treatment option that directly targets problematic trigger points and helps tight muscle knots relax. Offering immediate pain relief and allowing for greater freedom of movement, these injections can be a beneficial tool in addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain.

At Resolve Pain and Spine, our experienced team of pain specialists may occasionally use trigger point injections as a standalone treatment option. More often, however, they are recommended in combination with other therapies as part of a broader treatment plan.

To learn more about whether or not trigger point injections may be the right option for your particular symptoms and treatment goals, contact our West Orange or Brick location to book an initial consultation. We look forward to working with you and helping you move forward on your journey toward a pain-free lifestyle!

What Are Trigger Point Injections?

Regenerative Medicine in New Jersey

A trigger point injection is a treatment option that helps alleviate chronic pain, discomfort, and movement restrictions stemming from tight muscle knots known as trigger points. When a portion of the muscle and its fascia (the thin connective tissue surrounding it) contract without relaxing, the resulting knot can become extremely sensitive to the touch and cause referred pain that may be severe and ongoing.

During a trigger point injection, a small needle is used to deliver medication directly into one or more symptomatic muscle knots, allowing the muscle to relax. Depending on the circumstances, trigger point injections may contain a combination of saline solution, local anesthetic, corticosteroid medication, and/or botulinum toxin. In some cases, a dry needling technique may also be used without delivering any injection substance at all.

At Resolve Pain and Spine, our leading pain management doctors usually recommend trigger point injections in combination with other treatment options. They may be effective in alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions and injuries.

Conditions Treated

Trigger point injections can be used to address a wide range of different chronic pain conditions ranging from muscle spasms to headaches and nerve pain. At Resolve Pain and Spine, some of the conditions we commonly treat with trigger point injections include:

Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a common chronic condition characterized by inflammation in the muscles and surrounding fascia. It can cause severe pain that is exacerbated by touching or pressing on trigger points. Targeted trigger point injections can help.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. In some cases, trigger point injections can help alleviate its symptoms.

Injuries

When muscles and fascia become injured, trigger points can develop, prolonging pain and inhibiting the healing process. Trigger point injections can break up scar tissue that has formed and help injured muscles relax and heal.

What To Expect

Trigger point injections are a minimally invasive procedure that is usually completed within just a few minutes. At Resolve Pain and Spine, our doctors perform the treatment on-site at our state-of-the-art clinic and patients can usually resume their daily routine and activities directly afterward.

Before receiving a trigger point injection, you will be comfortably seated or lying down, the treatment area will be cleaned, and a topical anesthetic may be applied. Next, your experienced doctor will locate the trigger point, pinch it between thumb and finger, and perform one or more injections directly into it. Depending on the situation, multiple trigger points may be targeted in one appointment.

Because trigger points are often hypersensitive, you may experience some discomfort during the injection procedure, but the muscle should quickly relax and most patients experience noticeable pain relief within the first 24 hours after treatment. Our knowledgeable and compassionate team will be readily available to respond to any questions or concerns you may have along the way.

The effects of trigger point injections typically last for about a month, at which time the treatment may need to be repeated. The window of time when your muscles are more relaxed and pain has been reduced offers an ideal opportunity for also implementing other treatments, therapies, and pain management techniques. Your knowledgeable Resolve doctor will recommend the best course of action.
